Daimler Truck North America announces investment in Detroit Manufacturing Plant

Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) has revealed plans covering ‘significant investments’ at its Detroit Manufacturing Plant location in Redford Township, located 15 miles from downtown Detroit.

About $285 million will be made available for plant upgrades and tech development. The project will add around 400 jobs to the 2,000 workers already employed at the plant.

The investment will be made in partnership with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) as part of the state’s Critical Industry Program, which provides support for capital investments in Michigan.

The MEDC has added a $27.7 million performance-based Critical Industry Program grant to support job creation. DTNA has also received Michigan Strategic Fund support for State Essential Services abatement, with an estimated value of $3.29 million.

Specifically, the investment plans cover additional funds for the Internal Combustion Engine Platform. Further, there will be support for Research & Development Facilities for new technology advances.

The goal is to modernise the existing plant in order to maintain current production capacity, while continuing to develop new ICE components intended to improve fuel efficiency.

Daimler Truck NA puts forward that diesel engines remain ‘crucial’ for many commercial trucking applications.

Construction related to the investment is expected to start in early 2025, contingent on the completion of planning and approval processes.
