Renault Trucks, M&S complete zero-emission distribution trial

Renault Trucks and retail chain Marks & Spencer (M&S) have completed a six-month trial which saw five Renault E-Tech 4x2 HGVs moving goods between a Clothing & Home distribution centre and retail outlets across London and south-east England.

The project was delivered under the eFREIGHT 2030 project, of which Renault Trucks and M&S are founding members. This is part of the UK Government’s Zero-Emission HGV and Infrastructure demonstrator (ZEHID) which has a goal of decarbonising freight transport.

The Renault E-Tech trucks each have six 90 kWh battery packs and three electric motors which deliver up to 490 kW of continuous power and maximum torque of 2,400 Nm. An Optidriver AT 2412 12-speed auto transmission delivers the power.

Additional features include air deflectors from Kuda to enhance aerodynamics, plus larger door mirrors for safer urban operation and an anti-rollaway parking brake.

All of the E-Tech trucks worked over a double shift, supported by charging infrastructure installed by Voltempo as part of the eFREIGHT 2030 project at the truck base in Welham Green. Additional infrastructure at M&S stores to support charging is planned for the future.

The test to serve Clothing & Home distribution comes after three 26-tonne electric Renault E-Tech D Wide rigids with refrigerated bodies completed a year of trials working over a two-shift program.

A special driver event was hosted at the Welham Green location to celebrate the successful rollout. Driver feedback noted that the trucks offered improved comfort, reduced noise levels and smoother handling.
