AFC Energy says big price drop on new fuel cell genset

AFC Energy, the UK developer of hydrogen fuel cell generators, said it had completed the first-build of a new 30kW generator, the LC30, with operational testing now underway.

The company said the water-cooled LC30 will offer significant benefits over its air-cooled predecessor, including a 66% price reduction, an 85% reduction in manufacturing cost, and a smaller footprint (45% lower volume).

The LC30 unit is designed to accommodate a 100kW fuel cell in the same chassis, where customers need more power.

John Wilson, CEO of AFC Energy, said; “10 months ago, we set out our ambitious plan to redevelop the core architecture of our fuel cell generators to reduce cost by 66% and drive towards cost parity with diesel.

“I am delighted that we have surpassed our target and have delivered our first next generation LC30 Generator on schedule and below our original budget.

“We look forward to working with our customers to roll out deployments and achieve regulatory approval through our enhanced channel network that we are further strengthening.

“We remain well-positioned to convert our pipeline of opportunities into contractual orders, deliver sustainable revenue growth without the need for government subsidies and create significant shareholder value.”

AFC Energy operates a rental joint venture with Speedy Hire in the UK, Speedy Hydrogen Solutions, and has a manufacturing partner, Volex plc.

UK-based Volex is a US$1 billion revenue business with 27 manufacturing facilities around the world, active in a wide range of sectors, including off-highway machinery, data centre components and medical equipment.
