Amtrak orders more Airo trainsets

Being supplied by Siemens Mobility

Amtrak executed a contract option to order 10 additional Amtrak Airo trainsets as demand for passenger rail travel exceeds expectations.

This brings the total contract order to 83 trainsets, with the first Amtrak Airo trainset scheduled to debut in 2026. These new trains will operate on routes throughout the country. The trains are being built at Siemens Mobility’s Sacramento, CA manufacturing facility.

In 2021, Siemens Mobility was awarded $3.4 billion in contracts in the United States to design, manufacture and technically support 73 multi-powered trains for Amtrak.

The order includes dual power and hybrid battery trains. The first will be delivered in 2024, while the first of its kind Venture Hybrid battery train will begin testing in 2025. The trains for the Northeast Corridor and other routes will be delivered from 2024 through 2030. Through the use of multi-power systems, including hybrid battery operation, they will also provide a substantial environmental benefit through reduced emissions compared to the existing fleet, according to Siemens Mobility.

“We are thrilled to satisfy the soaring demand for train travel with new state-of-the-art, American-made equipment that ensures the highest standards of comfort, service and amenities,” said Amtrak President Roger Harris. “As we advance this vision, we’re committed to getting people where they need to go, while reducing road and air congestion, creating jobs and supporting the American economy.”
