Ansaldo Energia has shipped its first GT36 gas turbine, the most powerful turbine built by the Italian company.

Offering up to 538 MW, the 50 HZ GT36 is currently the most powerful in the company’s product portfolio and the most powerful and performing turbine ever built in Italy.

The first GT36 turbine will be installed at the Porto Marghera combined cycle plant in northern Italy. The facility will then be able to reach a total electrical power of 780 MW and an energy efficiency of 63%, the highest made available today by technology, with a reduction of specific CO2 emissions by 40% compared to the average of the current Italian thermoelectric park, and of nitrogen oxides (NOX) by over 70%. When fully operational, it will be the most efficient thermoelectric plant in Europe, according to Ansaldo Energia.

Developing the GT36 unfolded over seven years, with a commitment of more than 3.7 million hours. The GT36 is assembled at Ansaldo Energia’s plant in Cornigliano, Genoa, Italy. In 2016, Ansaldo Energia finalized the purchase of Alstom’s advanced heavy duty gas turbine business and subsidiary company, Power system Manufacturing, from GE.

The deal include all intellectual property rights for the GT26 and GT36 heavy duty gas turbines.
