Battery power for Falcon tower cranes from Northvolt
15 May 2023
Falcon Cranes has added Northvolt energy storage units to power tower cranes and other site equipment.
The UK-based tower crane specialist has added the modular Voltpack battery modules to its recently established power rental division fleet.
In some applications the lithium-ion battery and charger modules will replace a diesel generator. For other applications they will allow the use of either a smaller diesel generator or a single-phase mains electricity supply, instead of three-phase.
Power revolution
Falcon describes it as a game changer that will revolutionise the construction industry. It will help reduce carbon emissions and increase efficiency on construction sites, the company said.
The Voltpack is individual battery modules that can be combined to provide an electricity supply with a capacity from 281 to 1,405 kW-h. Charging the Voltpack batteries can be from a conventional mains electricity supply or from renewables, for example, solar panels or wind turbines on site.
Charging time varies according to the size of the battery pack and of the electricity supply on site. Falcon said it typically takes 4 hours to fully charge the battery on a 125 Amp supply.
