Bergen supplying engines for 13.2 MW CHP project

Project includes four 3.3 MW medium-speed units

Bergen Engines will supply two medium-speed units for power plants in Puerto Rico.

Sampol Group, a multinational applied engineering company, has signed a power purchase agreement for two new efficient energy power plants for the pharmaceutical industry in Puerto Rico.

Each site will use two Bergen Engines’ B36:45L 3.3 MW medium speed (720 rpm) units. The plants are hybrid-renewable microgrid solutions that will integrate solar photovoltaic technology, batteries, and baseload cogeneration for maximum use of renewable and cleaner energy, the company said.

Power supply continuity is a challenge for any island in the Caribbean but after Hurricane Maria in 2017, resiliency became a key factor for any business in Puerto Rico, the company said. Sampol said its design for the new hybrid electrical model for this project will help ensure power supply continuity.

Both sites will be operated as Combined Heat & Power (CHP) plants. These two cogenerations will produce high-efficiency power, where the excess heat will be recycled to produce steam and hot water, covering factory thermal needs, and avoiding the use of fuel in traditional factory boilers.

“We are delighted that Sampol has selected four of our 6-cylinder natural gas engines, to provide reliable baseload power alongside renewables and in a microgrid application,” said Theo Lorentzos, Head of Sales for the Americas at Bergen Engines. “With market-leading efficiency and low-cost maintenance, we can maximize the through–life project cost for our customer.”
