CATL starts preproduction tests at Hungary plant

In July this year, Power Progress reported that CATL had unveiled its new Techtrans II battery pack. This new model can support ultra-fast charging to 80% of capacity in around seven minutes, largely because reduced cell resistance can manage heat output.

Following on from that, CATL has reported the start of trial production at its new cell factory in Debrecen, Hungary. The goal is to validate equipment and manufacturing processes in advance of series production.
Testing of related production tech has been on-going since 2024. Following full sign off, the plant will have annual production capacity of around 100 GWh. This capacity will make the Debrecen plant the largest CATL facility outside of China.
CATL will be supplying a series of OEM passenger and light commercial vehicle manufacturers, many of which have manufacturing hubs in Hungary.
In addition to being the largest CATL site outside China, the new plant is likely to be the largest of its type in Europe. Currently, the largest cell production factory is operated by LG Energy in Wroclaw, Poland, with a reported annual output of 86 GWh.
