Cogen for Berlin

03 May 2017

Siemens said it has received an order to build a new cogeneration plant in the Marzahn district of Berlin. The company will act as general contractor for the energy utility company Vattenfall Europe Wärme AG to erect a natural-gas fired combined-cycle power plant with district heat extraction.

The plant will be powered by its SGT5-2000E gas turbine, which is manufactured at Siemens’ gas turbine plant in Berlin’s Moabit district.  Siemens SGT5-2000E gas turbine is one of its established models for the 50 Hz market for use in simple cycle or combined cycle processes with or without combined heat and power. The company said It is suitable for all load ranges, especially for the peak load range.  It has an ISO base power output of 187 MW, a heat rate of 9,945 kJ/kwh (9,427 btu kW/hr) and a gross efficiency of 36.2%.  In combined cycle power plant operation, Siemens said the SGT5-2000E has a net plant power output of 275 MW in 1×1 operations or 551 MW in 2×1 installations.  Net plant efficiency is 53.3% in both cases.

Scheduled to begin operation in 2020, the new facility will produce electric power while simultaneously supplying the east side of the German capital with district heating. The plant has an electrical generating capacity of 260 MW and a thermal capacity of 230 MW.  The order also includes a long-term service agreement covering the gas turbine-generator set.

Siemens’ scope of supply includes the major components, including the gas turbine, steam turbine and two electrical generators, all to be fabricated at Siemens manufacturing plants in Berlin, Görlitz and Erfurt, Germany. Siemens will likewise supply the heat recovery steam generator. The unit is to be erected in a multi-shaft configuration, and Siemens said will achieve a fuel efficiency rating of approximately 90 percent.
