Cummins has approved HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) for use with the full range of Off Highway Performance Series engines. The range features engines with displacements from 3.8- to 15 L.

The approval comes shortly after the US Energy Information Administration stated that production of the HVO fuel could double by 2025, a move which should help drive down the emissions from off-highway machine users.

“HVO is a low carbon solution that enables customers to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions while using their current equipment,” said Jeremy Harsin, Cummins Off Highway marketing director. “It can be supplied through the same infrastructure as conventional diesel, making it easy to use.”

Also referred to in some regions as renewable diesel or ‘green’ diesel, HVO is created using fats including used vegetable oil. The fuel creates CO2 when used, but that CO2 is offset owing to the plant/biomass source having absorbed CO2 during its growth phase.

“We understand that customers are looking to find ways to improve the sustainability of their businesses,” continued Harsin. “Using equipment installed with our latest ultra-clean and efficient Performance Series engines, powered by renewable fuel is a simple, and cost-effective step.”
