Cummins Reorganizing U.K. Gen-Set Operations

17 February 2016

Cummins Inc. announced it is reorganizing manufacturing at its Kent, U.K., generator set assembly operations as part of its plan to adjust to weak global demand for power generation equipment.

Over the next 24 months, Cummins said it will relocate Kent’s gen-set operations to facilities in Daventry, U.K., Phaltan, India and Wuhan, China. The footprint of the Cummins Kent site will be reduced as it is transformed into a regional distribution and logistics center.

“By relocating our U.K. generator assembly operations to other locations, we can better balance our capacity with demand and leverage our global supply chain strengths,” said Rich Freeland, Cummins Inc. chief operating officer. “We believe that making these changes will improve our manufacturing capabilities and processes, enhance our customer service and generate efficiencies by further integrating our power generation and engine supply chains.”

The products assembled at Kent include generator sets powered by engines with displacements from 13 to 91 L. Among these are:

 – 50 Hz gen-sets from 280 to 883 kW standby ratings and 256 to 751.2 kW prime, powered by Cummins NT855, QSX15, QSZ13, VTA28, QSK23, QST30 and VTA28 diesels.

– 50 Hz gen-sets in 888 kW to 2.4 MW standby ratings and 800 kW to 2.2 MW prime ratings, powered by QST30, KTA38, KTA50, QSK60 and QSK78 diesels.

 – 60 Hz gen-sets from 350 kW to 2.25 MW standby ratings and 320 kW to 1.825 MW prime ratings, driven by Cummins NTA855, QSZ13, QSX15, VTA28, QSK23, KTA38, QST30, KTA50 and QSK50 diesels.

 – 50 and 60 Hz lean-burn gas gen-sets with continuous ratings from 315 kW to 2.0 MW, powered by Cummins QSK19, QSK60 and QSV91 gaseous-fueled engines.

Cummins has had operations in the U.K for nearly 50 years and currently has eight manufacturing facilities and 4500 employees across 23 sites in 17 cities.
