In June 2024, Damen Shipyards signed a contract with German dredging contractor Hegemann for a standard BS 500 booster station, which will be fitted out with Damen’s in-house developed Marine NOX Emission Reduction System.

A BS 500 standard stock booster was already under construction at the Damen Dredging yard at the time the order was signed. The booster is fitted out with a 500-mm pipeline connection dredge pump powered by a Caterpillar 3512C. The 954-kW diesel engine operates in compliance with IMO Tier II emission regulations.

The booster station, which has a pump production of approximately 4,000 cu. meters/hour, started on a job in Emden, northern Germany, in September. It is connected to Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers (TSHD), with the pumping station designed to boost the discharge distance of the vessels’ sand cargo.

The Marine NOX Emission Reduction System, which is scheduled to be retrofit to the booster station, is both IMO Tier III and EU Stage V compliant. Its active emissions control technology includes a silencer that combines selective catalytic reduction (SCR) with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). The SCR technology achieves over 75% removal efficiency, said Damen.

The modular emission reduction system will be fitted later due to a longer delivery time.

“Our Stage V Emission Reduction System is a practical add-on. It has been designed in such a way that it can be retrofitted easily,” said Joppe Neijens, sales manager at Damen Shipyards. “It will be installed on the top of the container housing of the booster station without any hassle.”

“We are happy with the delivery of the booster,” said Martin Janßen, head of Inspection at Hegemann. “We are actively working towards a greener future and our investment in the emission reduction system reflects our commitment to responsible operations.”
