Danfoss Editron to deliver powertrain components for fast crew supply vessel
14 October 2021
Danfoss Editron has been selected by Damen Shipyards to supply the electric portion of the hybrid-electric powertrain fitted to the yard’s latest fast crew supply vessel (FCS).
Billed as the FCS 7011, the ship will be used by offshore energy companies for high-speed transit of personnel and light cargo.
Designed by Damen Shipyards, the FCS will be able to carry up to 122 passengers at speeds of up to 40 knots. It will be capable of servicing platforms up to 150 miles offshore.
The Danfoss Editron powertrain can deliver a range of about 100 nautical miles at high speed.
The hybrid-electric powertrain comprises DC distribution boards running at nominal voltage of 700 VDC, four shaft generators and an Editron load and control system. This setup will complement four main engines driving Hamilton HT9000 waterjets and the Danfoss Editron shaft generators.
The control systems will be capable of monitoring the remaining charge so as to keep fuel usage to a minimum.
It is expected that it will become the first crew boat capable of competing with helicopters, delivering minimal losses in time while also providing increased comfort and safety.
The FCS 7011 recently completed sea trials in Turkey. First operational testing will take place in late 2021 in the North Sea, with commercial testing due to start in Q1 2022.
