UK regional bus operator Go-Ahead Group has signed a contract covering the purchase of 20 hydrogen-powered buses.

The single-decker GB Kite Hydroliner buses were ordered from Wrightbus, which is based in Northern Ireland. They are expected to start services in June 2022.

The buses feature hydrogen fuel cell powertrains. They will be the first hydrogen-powered buses in the 6,000 vehicle bus fleet operated by Go-Ahead.

The fuel cell-powered buses will operate in the Brighton & Hove region, in such areas as Crawley, Redhill and Gatwick Airport.

Brighton & Hove and Metrobus has also revealed it is looking to purchase a further 36 fuel cell buses. If this goes ahead, the company states it will become the largest hydrogen fuel cell bus fleet in Europe.

The bus purchase was part funded by money from the UK Government and European Union zero-emissions bus scheme.
