H-Power plans second phase of Komatsu hydrogen test

H-Power, a producer of hydrogen-to-power solutions, has reported the completion of the first phase of the Komatsu Joint Development Agreement (JDA) program.

Under the JDA, first announced in February this year, H-Power and Komatsu worked to combine the former company’s ammonia cracking tech with a Komatsu diesel engine engine to assess the feasibility of a new ammonia-fuel engine and the potential for scaling of production.

The related information notes ‘our market-leading decentralized ammonia cracker and fuel cell generator are engineered to unlock the low-carbon hydrogen market by meeting customers’ needs with scalable, reliable fuel supplies. H-Power is enabling customers to decarbonize at a price that is commercially viable’.

The second and final phase of the build out will see a working demonstration of H-Power’s ammonia cracker integrated with a Komatsu engine. This is set to take place between September and December 2026.

Should the test prove successful, H-Power stated that it could provide Komatsu customers with a sustainable fuel solution for fleets working in the construction and mining sectors.

The value of the project is said to be around $2 million.
