Hyzon completes trial of fuel cell refuse truck in California
26 November 2024
Hyzon, a specialist manufacturer of hydrogen fuel cell (FC) tech for zero-emission vehicles, has completed trials of a FC waste management vehicle.
Developed in partnership with New Way Trucks, the vehicle was operated by Mt. Diablo Resource Recovery. The test areas covered towns in California, including Concord, Pittsburg, Oakley, Rio Vista and parts of Contra Costa.
“This successful trial showcases the potential for hydrogen to drive meaningful decarbonization, without sacrificing performance, in challenging sectors like waste and recycling,” said Hyzon CEO Parker Meeks.
The truck was produced in partnership with New Way Trucks, a specialist refuse truck body manufacturer. It is said to be the first FC refuse vehicle in North America.
Don Ross, chief Sales officer for New Way, said: ”We are in a unique position to provide alternative power solutions to waste haulers looking to meet zero-emissions goals and decarbonization initiatives.”
This was the 10th trial of its FC trucks over the second half of 2024, covering both its Class 8 and refuse collection models. The company is expecting to complete customer trials of its Class 8 models, reported to involve 30 major fleets, by February 2025.
