Iveco to support food retailer’s switch from diesel to LNG power
22 May 2023

Italian commercial vehicle manufacturer Iveco is to work with Edeka Minden Hannover, a leading German food retailer, in switching its full truck fleet from diesel to bio-LNG.
Covering about 700 vehicles, the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
The German company recently placed an order for 125 S-Way LNG trucks, which will be added to an existing order for 150 further units placed in 2022. These will join the 80 LNG-fuel Iveco trucks currently operated by Edeka.
Iveco S-Way LNG trucks use the Cursor 13 LNG engine from FPT Industrial. With a 12.9-litre displacement, the model is said to offer the best fuel efficiency over long-distance routes. The Cursor 13 has a series of features designed to reduce maintenance costs, including a 90,000 km oil change interval.
A three-way catalyst helps to deliver compliance with emissions standards, while also delivering noise in operation. This helps with operating vehicles in inner cities.
Earlier in May, Edeka opened its first ‘alternative fuel’ refuelling station, located at the company’s logistics centre in Lauenau. The company is planning to open a series of further stations across Germany.
In total, the switch from diesel to LNG fuel is estimated to cut 40,000 tonnes of CO2 output, plus reductions in NOx and particulates.
“With the commissioning of our first bio-LNG filling station, we at Edeka Minden-Hannover are ushering in a new era of low-emission delivery traffic,” said company CEO Mark Rosenkranz.
“Today, bio-LNG is the only scalable renewable fuel,” said Christian Sulser, Sales and Marketing director at Iveco Magirus. “700 vehicles are also a clear sign of confidence in the LNG competence of the Iveco brand.”
