UEC42LSH type engine to receive orders for more than 50 units in Japan and overseas
Japan Engine Corp. (J-ENG) said it has expanded sales of its UEC42LSH type engine, which was developed as a main engine for small and medium-sized chemical tankers and handysize bulk carriers, following the 6 consecutive orders in FY2020.
The company said it expects to secure a cumulative order total of more than 30 units, citing in part the “recent boom” in the market for handysize bulk carriers.
In addition, the share of UEC42LSH type engines as the main engine for coastal vessels in China is rapidly expanding, and Guangzhou Diesel Engine Factory Co., Ltd., a Chinese licensee that recently signed a new license agreement, has 20 units in a short period of time, the company said.

“This is a development concept that was successful in thorough market research in advance, high operational economy, which is one of the features of the UE engine, and low-pressure EGR and SCR, which are J-ENG’s original technologies,” the company said in a news release. “Excellent environmental measures have been well received by many ship owners and shipyards, and this is the result of active adoption in ship types ahead of EEDI Phase 3, which will be applied from 2025.”
Since the delivery of the first unit of the UEC42LSH engine in June 2021, the company said it has worked to improve the engine’s operational economic efficiency and environmental performance against the background of the recent rise in crude oil prices and rising environmental awareness.
“We will continue to upgrade the version to further reduce fuel consumption,” the company said.
The company said it expects the UEC42LSH type engine to receive orders for more than 50 units in Japan and overseas, and through this sales expansion activity, its application as the standard ship type main engine of domestic and overseas shipyards has been completed. Therefore, further orders are expected to increase in the future.
