Kohler’s Hybrid Module

29 March 2019

Kohler will present a new hybrid electrical and mechanical combined power generation unit: the Kohler Hybrid Energy Module (K-HEM) in Hall A4 booth 225.

K-HEM will generate power using a combination between a three-cylinder KDW 1003 diesel engine (with a power output of 18 kW) and a 48-V electric motor with a peak power of 15 kW and 9 Kw continuous power. The system can operate also as a generator for energy accumulation. The diesel engine complies with EU Stage 5 emissions standard without a diesel particulate filter.

In total, the unit will be able to deliver 30 kW power without needing an exhaust aftertreatment and is thus intended for those applications having intermittent duty cycles and need power peaks, such as welder, mowers, and tractors with implements. K-HEM is also suitable for equipment working with continuous low load cycles and not reaching the operating temperatures needed for the regeneration of a diesel particulate filter, as for example aerial platforms and forklifts, among others.

A built-in master control unit allows users to monitor and manage working modes and transitions. Since the electric motor can work both as an auxiliary engine and as a generator, energy recovery from the transmission is possible, during braking and exhaust phases, but also from the diesel engine during phases with low energy demand.

Kohler explained that installation in machines is easy as the hybrid unit can be integrated into a hydraulic system or mechanic transmission. Also, the K-HEM allows for a high degree of integration between mechanical and hydraulic parts; each actuator can be managed by the hydraulic or mechanic circuit and is controlled by the master control unit.
