Responding to a question from KHL about the demand for electric equipment in North America and the potential for growth, Andrew Ryan, President of LiuGong North America, said, “Demand for North America is currently a fairly small part of the market and it is mostly concentrated on wheeled loader product lines. Within that, LiuGong has around half of the market.
“The opportunity is growing. The early adopters for electric equipment has been industries that were facing significant pressure to drive sustainability outcomes by their shareholders, executive management teams and stakeholders. While that is still relevant, the story has changed considerably. The more hours that these machines do we are learning more about them, and we can define very clearly the cost advantages of electric machines. Customers are seeing the advantages in TCO [total cost of ownership] and demand is increasing at a rapid pace.”
The OEM said that operating cost reductions exceeding 40% for electric equipment are achieved through reduced wear components, elimination of traditional fluids and filters, and streamlined maintenance intervals.
At ConExpo LiuGong North America has a 13-machine lineup including the 922FE Electric Excavator and 870HE Electric Wheeled Loader. The OEM will also be showing the diesel-powered 952F Excavator and 856T Wheeled Loader, the 4215D Motor Grader, 6608F Vibratory Roller and the TD16N Dozer.
While the OEM stated that it was continuing to develop new diesel machines and would offer customers whatever solution they wanted, Ryan added that electric equipment was a “core” part of LiuGong’s future strategy and that the OEM has been working on electric equipment since 2018.
Luo Guobing, president and vice chairman of LiuGong was at the event and added that “digitisation and sustainability” were at the heart of the company’s plans and reiterated that North America was a “very demanding and very important” market for the OEM.
