The Lamma Power Station on Lamma Island is a thermal power station and solar farm with a total installed capacity of 3,652 MW. Operated by The Hongkong Electric Co. Ltd. (HK Electric), the station is an essential source of electricity for more than 580,000 customers on both Hong Kong and Lamma islands.

HK Electric is one of the leading power companies in Hong Kong and sole electricity provider to Hong Kong and Lamma islands. It has worked with Mitsubishi Power, a power solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., for years, including for delivery of numerous core power generation system components, such as gas turbines, steam turbines and boilers, for the Lamma Power Station. According to Mitsubishi Power, it has supplied HK Electric with approximately 98% of its generating equipment on an output basis.

That’s why, when the time for re-provision came, HK Electric turned to Mitsubishi Power to re-provision the GT5, GT6 and GT7 gas turbine power generation equipment utilized by the power station. “While the power station continues to put into operation high-output gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power generation systems, the need for re-provision of key existing facilities as a backup power source had become evident, leading to the contract,” Mitsubishi Power stated.

According to the announcement of the re-provision order, the project will realize more efficient re-provision by utilizing the existing gas turbine systems, which use Mitsubishi Power’s M701DA gas turbines as their core components. Mitsubishi Power supplies the power generation systems, with the generators manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric Corp.

The re-provisions are intended to enhance reliability as a backup power source and contribute to Hong Kong’s energy security, the announcement noted. The re-provisions are scheduled for successive completion, with resumption of operations from 2025 onwards.
