Mitsubishi supplying turbine for Texas plant

Premium Content

Cutting emissions one driver at project

Mitsubishi Power will supply a M501GAC (G-series Air-Cooled) gas turbine for the Newman Generating Station in El Paso, Texas, USA, for El Paso Electric (EPE).

The 228 MW gas turbine power generation facility is scheduled to go live in 2023 and will replace the three facilities that have been in operation for over 60 years at the power plant. By quickly adjusting the load in order to respond to fluctuations in electricity demand and renewable energy, Mitsubishi Power will help the plant to coexist with renewable energy sources with unstable output and at the same time reduce CO2 emissions.

In New Mexico, one of EPE’s transmission areas, legislation is being considered that would require 100% clean electricity by 2045, and Mitsubishi said its gas turbines with hydrogen combustion technology would meet the criteria. The company said it and EPEare considering signing a joint development agreement within the next few months to develop a roadmap for developing the environmental infrastructure for green hydrogen.

“Achieve our bold goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 40% compared to 2015 by 2035, we have flexible and reliable gas turbines that complement renewable energy and renewable,” said EPE’s Senior Vice President Steve Buraczyk. “The cutting-edge G-gas turbines are flexible and proven. In addition, our extensive experience as a system integrator and gas turbines with advanced hydrogen combustion technology have made the solution the company offers the best choice.”
