Monarch Tractor reported to have collapsed

A series of news outlets are reporting that Monarch Tractor, developer and manufacturer of electric and autonomous agricultural machines, has collapsed.

Monarch is reported to have laid off all employees and vacated its California headquarters after using up more than $240 million in funding.

There are also reports of the company facing lawsuits over alleged machine defects and misleading claims covering product performance.

Monarch Tractor launched in 2023 offering electric, autonomous tractors largely positioned for fruit growers, including vineyards. The zero-emission machines were said to be capable of autonomously clearing weeds.

But buyers found the machines could not operate autonomously and in one case said they demonstrated ‘unsafe self-driving behavior’.

Multiple dealerships went on to sue Monarch, alleging defective products and misleading autonomy claims.

The collapse of Monarch could see assets liquidated, although intellectual property might at some point be made available. It remains to be seen whether that would be of interest, considering specific machine issues and the soft demand for high-value electric machines.
