New biomethane plant opens in Pernambuco, Brazil

Orizon Valorização de Resíduos has inaugurated a new biomethane production facility in Ecoparque Jaboatão in Pernambuco, located on the north-east coast of Brazil.

Using a complete biogas delivery system supplied by Greenlane Renewables, the new R$258 ($49 million) plant demonstrates how waste management and energy infrastructure can be integrated to produce renewable fuel.

The new plant collects biogas produced by decomposing waste which is then purified. The final product can be used within existing fossil gas distribution networks without modification.

Gas comes from the 3,500 tonnes of trash per day collected from around Recife, Jaboatão dos Guararapes and Cabo de Santos Agostinho. From this, maximum output is about 110,000 cubic meters of gas per day.

Due to the continuous waste source, gas production will continue throughout the year.

While much of the gas will enter the Copergás (Pernambuco Gas Company) pipeline, it is hoped that availability of the fuel will support adoption of more gas-fuel vehicles by heavy-duty truck and urban transport operators.
