New Deere Marine Auxiliary, Propulsion Diesels

John Deere Power Systems (JDPS) has added to its marine diesel engine portfolio with the introduction of a pair gen-set and auxiliary drive diesels, as well as a new propulsion model.

 The new gen-set and auxiliary drive models are the 6090HFM85 and 6135HFM85 (above) marine diesel engines specifically designed for radiator-cooled marine gen-set and auxiliary applications.

The new JDPS marine propulsion diesel is model 4045SFM85, a 4.5L model designed to offer high power to weight ratio for repowering and new boat construction, and is applicable for planing and semi-displacement hulls.

The new PowerTech 6090HFM85 is rated for variable speed at 325 hp (242 kW) at 2000 rpm and

for generator drive and constant speed auxiliary at 351 hp (262 kW) at 1800 rpm. The PowerTech 6135HFM85 is rated for variable speed at 500 hp (373 kW)  at 2000 rpm and for a generator drive and constant speed auxiliary at 614 hp (458 kW) at 1800 rpm.

 The new PowerTech 4045SFM85 has two ratings for light-duty commercial vessels, high-speed governmental applications and high-speed pleasure craft, which includes an M4 rating with 275 hp (205 kW) at 2600 rpm and M5 rating with 315 hp (235 kW) at 2800 rpm.

Heather Balk, marine market planner for JDPS said the new marine engines are applicable for gen-set, constant speed and variable speed auxiliary applications, particularly when wet manifolds and marine society classification certificates are desired or required. The ratings of both engines meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Marine Tier 3 emissions regulations and are compliant with International Maritime Organization Tier II standards for commercial applications, Bal said. The engines are type approved by the American Bureau of Shipping.

Features of both the new 6090HFM85 and the 6135HFM85 engines include:

·                 American Bureau of Shipping Type Approval

·                 Water-cooled turbo and wet-exhaust manifold

·                 Options with and without a marine air cleaner/CCV

·                 Isolated ground electronics, including the starter and alternator

·                 Available with fan-drive options

 The PowerTech 6090HFM85 and 6135HFM85 engines will be available for order by early 2018 . All John Deere marine power solutions are available through authorized John Deere marine engine distributors and marine dealers.

 “We’re excited to offer these additional air-cooled ratings, which are designed specifically for the marine gen-set and marine auxiliary engine markets, to the current 9.0L and 13.5L radiator-cooled, dry exhaust manifold engines,” she said. “The range of engine options allow our customers to select the best product for a variety of generator and auxiliary application needs including pumps, winches, cranes and hydraulics.”

JDPS’ new 4045 marine propulsion diesel.

Recreational Craft Directive II emissions regulations, as well as International Maritime Organization Tier II standards for commercial and recreational applications, JDPS said. The engine is pending approval by American Bureau of Shipping, DNV GL, Lloyd’s Register and Bureau Veritas.

The engine uses a wastegated turbocharger designed to provide more torque capability at the low and middle rpm range, which is most notable during vessel acceleration, and features replaceable cylinder liners, making it possible to rebuild the engine for extended service life, Balk said.

Additional features of the 4045SFM85 engine include:

·                 Standard front fuel service, optional left-hand or right-hand oil filter options for twin engine applications

·                 Upgraded valve train. It delivers a 40% increase in power and a 9% reduction in total engine weight for a 53% increase in power density compared to the 4045AFM85

·                 The low-profile heat exchanger reduces overall height by 1.7” from the 4045AFM85.

·                 A water-cooled exhaust manifold creates a cooler and quieter environment for both passengers and crew.
