The Schottel Group is showcasing new products and developments at SMM 2022, a leading trade fair for the maritime industry taking place in Hamburg, Germany, Sept. 6 to 9. The German steerable propulsion system manufacturer is bundling its core competencies in Engineering, Operation and After Sales Service to inform attendees about how it will address the marine industry’s challenges.

Presented to the public for the first time was the SRP-D (“Dynamic”) rudder propeller variant, designed to meet the growing requirements for operational efficiency of W2W vessels. Based on a rudder propeller, the SRP-D provides an economical yet effective solution to improve the positional accuracy of vessels in DP operation, including near offshore structures even in demanding weather conditions.

According to Schottel, high-efficiency thrusters such as the SRP-D can optimally meet the demands of today’s offshore wind industry by enabling precision position and maximum maneuverability.

Also propelling the maritime industry forward is the EcoPeller (SRE). Data from a retrofit showed an energy savings from the SRE of up to 25% during the electrification of a Norwegian ferry. The EcoPeller is now increasingly being installed in other vessel types, with new orders including installations in LNG bunker vessels, superyachts and research vessels.

To meet increasing demand for electric propulsion concepts, Schottel offers azimuth thrusters for fully electric tugboats. Compact, integrated solutions such as the LE-Drive help to provide future-proof propulsion systems while enabling vessel owners to reduce emissions. The acquisition of majority shares of Turkish electric system integrator elkon by industrial holding company Schottel Industries GmbH will further intensify this approach.

Hybrid drive concepts are also contributing to the maritime industry’s efforts toward less environmental impact. In addition to new build and conversion projects for its Sydrive-M mechanical hybrid drive solution, Schottel is working closely with its partners to install the appropriate propulsion solutions, such as with scrubber barges, to ensure reduced emissions and cleaner air in ports.

To ensure the proximity of sales and service stations to vessel owners and operators globally, Schottel is adding to its existing network through additional contractual partners, most recently in Canada, Spain and France.

Other recent developments include the acquisition by Schottel Industries GmbH of newly founded Aquos, a company specializing in marine technologies such as underwater anchoring systems, as well as Schottel’s ongoing investments in research and development, including participation in research projects such as HyPNoS, ProNoVi and Red-Emi.
