Testing of Bosch H2 fuel cell system continuing in Spain

Bosch has reported that on-road testing of a bus fitted with its hydrogen fuel cell technology is continuing in Madrid, Spain.

The Irizar coach, operated by Alsa, is being used on routes where the fuel cell’s range can demonstrate its related advantages.

A spokesperson for Bosch said: “Fuel cells are especially well-suited for buses that travel longer distances every day and rarely have the opportunity to charge enroute. With this trial, we can clearly demonstrate that Bosch’s fuel cell technology is ready for the demands of large-scale deployment in passenger transport.”

The test bus is fitted with the FCPM C190 fuel cell system. This uses a horizontal double stack which has a continuous output of 190 kW. Onboard hydrogen tanks can deliver a potential range of around 1,000 km. Time to refill the tanks is between 10 and 15 minutes.

In addition to this system, Bosch also offers the FCPM C300, a system designed for heavy-duty buses and trucks. There is also the FCPM C100, a smaller unit producing about 100 kW and intended for city buses.

According to the release from Bosch, hydrogen power could help reduce inner-city pollution. By 2030, new city buses will be required to reduce carbon emissions by 90% compared to 2019 numbers.

Slightly ore than 38,000 new buses were registered in the EU over 2025, based on numbers from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).

To support its work with hydrogen fuel cell tech, in 2025 Bosch launched its Hybrion PEM electrolysis stack for hydrogen production.
