Thermamax Insulation Unit Wins First Contract

11 December 2018

Thermamax said its new business unit for the insulation of gas and steam turbines has received its first order.

By creating the turbine insulation business unit in June 2018, Thermamax said it has expanded its activities in the field of gas and steam turbines to proactively drive the company’s growth – especially in the North American market. Now the company is expanding its product portfolio and offering a comprehensive package for gas turbines with an output of up to 560 MW and steam turbines of more than 1 GW. Thermamax said it plans to tap into the great market potential with this project, especially in the United States, and thereby increase its growth.

The first successful sale was already booked, according to the company. Thermamax was contracted to insulate a gas turbine section for a power plant in the United States.

The project management and product development for the new business unit are taking place at the headquarters in Germany under the management of Andreas Riedinger. The team from Thermamax, Inc., in the United States will support the project in terms of sales. The newly developed insulation systems will be produced in the United States and installed with local specialists. This will meet the local content requirements of the North American

customers. In addition to the custom-fit insulation solution, this new offer focuses on the service and accessibility of the local Thermamax team.

Gas and steam turbines in gas and steam combined cycle power plants (CCGT) ensure a stable and safe power supply. Due to their size, the high temperature conditions of up to 700°C, the strong vibrations and necessity of the shortest possible installation times, they place high demands on the insulation.

Thermamax said the sophisticated, high-end insulation system is customized for the respective turbine’s geometry and offered with a comprehensive service package that can be assembled individually according to each customer’s specifications and needs.

Compared to conventional systems, the single-layer insulations from Thermamax offer a much greater insulating performance and service life while reducing the maintenance efforts to a minimum. The service accompanying the product ranges from a site inspection with thermography to the installation of the individually designed insulation system and maintenance.

Thermamax said it is not only looking to do business with turbine manufacturers but also power plant operators who need to have their aging insulation replaced.

“By establishing the turbine insulation unit and with the newly developed product and service package we gained access to a new market segment, which means we set an important milestone in the implementation of our growth strategy,” said Thermamax President Dirk Balthasar.
