Trimble expands machine control partnerships with Hyundai and Vermeer

The developments will allow contractors to upgrade Hyundai excavators from 2D grade control to Trimble’s Earthworks 3D platform, while Vermeer’s new remote-operated SM55 surface miner will be offered with a Trimble Ready 3D option.

Trimble said the move reflects a common progression among contractors from simpler 2D machine control systems to more advanced 3D capabilities as projects become more complex.

Scott Crozier, vice president of civil construction at Trimble, said, “A lot of civil contractors start with 2D machine control, which is great for simpler projects or instances where you just need to reach general depth and slope specifications, but upgrading to 3D is also a natural progression as jobs become more complex and users begin to experience the benefits firsthand.

“Now, contractors that are currently using 2D systems on select Hyundai models will be able to upgrade to a 3D Earthworks system quickly and easily in the aftermarket, through the Trimble dealer channel.”

Trimble Earthworks allows operators to create flat or sloped surfaces more easily and, when placed in automated mode, controls the boom and bucket to keep the excavator on grade while the operator manages the stick.

The company said the technology can help reduce overcutting, improve accuracy and increase productivity. Hyundai’s latest generation excavators equipped with the factory 2D grade control system will retain features such as virtual fence and payload monitoring after upgrading to the 3D platform.

Separately, Trimble has introduced a Trimble Ready 3D option for Vermeer’s newly launched SM55 surface miner, a smaller and more transportable machine designed for aggregates, limestone production and roadbuilding in rocky terrain.

The system enables operators to use Earthworks’ automated functionality to control the lift and tilt of the cutting head based on a digital project plan while operating the machine remotely.

Crozier said, “The new Vermeer SM55 is smaller, easier to transport and an overall more versatile addition to the Vermeer line of surface miners, and the ability to quickly and easily add Trimble Earthworks’ 3D option in the aftermarket further extends that versatility.

“Now, 3D models can be loaded remotely. In turn, the technology automatically steers the machine and controls the ground implement according to the plan, all without a cab or a person on the machine.”

Vermeer said the integration of the technology could allow operators to cut hard material and reach grade with a single machine, potentially replacing workflows that would otherwise require multiple pieces of equipment.
