UK haulier takes delivery of first Volvo FE Electric trucks

Fox Group, a haulage firm based in Blackpool, Lancashire, has taken delivery of two Volvo FE Electric tipper trucks. They are reported to be the first of their type delivered in the UK.
The trucks will operate from the company’ depot in the Enterprise Business Park, Leyland. Charging infrastructure has been installed to support the trucks and company staff vehicles.
Both Volvo FE Electric 6x2 rigid models are plated at 27 tonnes – an additional tonne more than standard three-axle rigid. This helps to off-set the additional weight of the batteries. Mounted with a Thompson tipper body the trucks will fulfil contracts with Lancashire County Council, amongst other customers.
Fitted with four battery packs the trucks have a range of about 150 km. The drivetrain consists of two electric motors (400 kW) and two-speed gearbox. Different operating modes can be selected to deliver best power usage. Driver training has been provided to help get the most from the trucks.
Volvo Trucks worked with Fox Group to determine optimal specification for the trucks. This included using the Electric Range Simulator, which combines various factors such as customer operation, payload, routes, driving hours and charging availability.
