Voith Turbo North America breaks ground on $5 million expansion

Voith Turbo North America, a division of the Voith Group, announced it has broken ground on a $5 million expansion of its workshop in York, Pa., that will increase the division’s U.S. manufacturing capabilities for the rail industry.

The expansion will add an additional 10,000 sq. ft. to the company’s existing 69,700-sq.-ft. facility. In addition, 17,000 ft. of existing warehouse space will be converted into workshop space for increased manufacturing and service work, the company said.

Both moves will expand capacity to meet growing demand in the rail sector. Through the expansion, Voith Turbo said the workshop for its rail operations in York will transition from a mostly service-based disassembly and reassembly business to new business manufacturing, plus will be able to support higher volume rail products such as gearboxes and couplers. It will also increase Voith Turbo’s capacity to meet Buy America compliance requirements.

“Through our rail business, which is largely for municipal transportation networks, we have many projects that require regional value content as well as Buy America compliance,” said Garrett Goll, director of sales, Voith Turbo Rail Business North America. “This expansion will boost our compliance capabilities for those contracts and in turn, will bring even more value for our customers.”

Several new full-time positions are expected to be added as a result of the expansion, with more job openings anticipated in future.

Construction of the workshop is scheduled for completion by spring of 2024.
