Following the opening of its new plant in Chennai, Tamil Nadu state, in January this year, Japanese engine manufacturer Yanmar has reported the addition of a new photovoltaic installation at the facility.

The 1 MWp (megawatt peak) rooftop system is made up of about 2200 photovoltaic modules. This has the potential to develop up to 1500 GWh of renewable electricity for use at Yanmar Engine India.

It is estimated that it will cut CO2 emissions by about 1200 tonnes per year.

“The installation of this solar photovoltaic generation system underscores Yanmar’s longstanding commitment to sustainable operations,” said Yanmar Engine India MD, Varun Khanna. “With this investment, we continue Yanmar’s goal to realise a sustainable future with access to powerful, highly efficient, and affordable engine technologies as well as implementing systems that can make optimal use of diverse energy sources to reduce the burden on the environment.”

The engine plant started operations with the target of producing 80,000 15 to 37 kW engines per year, increasing to 160,000 units annually. The engines are distributed in India (including International Tractors, a Yanmar JV) and various other markets, including the US and Europe.

The new photovoltaic array at the Yanmar India plant will deliver about 30% of the facility’s annual power requirement.
