Damen supplying sustainable vessels to Scandinavia
24 June 2025
In separate announcements, Damen Shipyards Group highlighted the delivery of a low-emission tug to Sweden’s Sundsvall Hamn (Port of Sundsvall) and the signing of a contract to deliver a hybrid workboat to Nova Sea, based in Lovund, Norway.

The recently delivered ASD Tug 3010 ICE, dubbed the Drake (the Swedish word for dragon), was constructed at Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam before being outfitted in the Netherlands. It includes a Damen Marine NOX Reduction System, an in-house developed selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system that Damen said reduces NOX emissions by up to 80%, enabling compliance with IMO Tier III regulations.
The modern vessel, which will replace an older tug built in 1972, incorporates a winterization package and other features that make it suited to operations in the harsh Baltic winters. The tug will spend around 75% of its time breaking ice to allow access of vessels in and out of Sundsvall Hamn and the nearby harbors of Östrand, Tunadal, Mokajen, Vindskarsvarv, Kubal and Stockvik. The tug will also periodically conduct crew transfer duties, perform escort towage operations and assist vessels with broken thrusters in harsh winds. In addition, it is outfitted with FiFi 1 firefighting capabilities.
Damen installed a shore power connection to the ASD 3010 ICE, as well. With this, Sundsvall Hamn is able to heat the tug at the quayside using electricity, which will help to substantially reduce emissions.
Hybrid workboat for Nova Sea
In other news, the company and its new partner, Folla Maritime Service AS, have signed a contract with Nova Sea, a leading salmon farming company, for construction and delivery of a new FollaPower 50EL hybrid workboat.
Folla Maritime Service is a shipyard located in Flatanger, Norway, that specializes in newbuilds and the servicing of vessels for the aquaculture industry. In April 2025, Damen reached an agreement to acquire a majority stake in the company.
The latest vessel for Nova Sea will be a single-hull design, 15 by 8 meters, powered by a twin propulsion system. It includes two electric motors, a 444-kWh battery pack and two electric thrusters. The onboard generator can also assist with propulsion and battery charging when necessary.
The new vessel will be number 106 delivered to Nova Sea from the Folla shipyard and is the sixth vessel of this specific type.
“Folla Maritime and Nova Sea have had a close partnership for some time, and we are proud to have once again earned their trust with the signing for another vessel,” said Otto Sjølien, managing director of Folla Maritime Service. “The FollaPower 50EL has been developed in close collaboration with Nova Sea, and this confirms the already strong and positive relationship between our shipyard and Nova Sea as our customer.”
“We have already taken delivery of several hybrid vessels from the shipyard, and several more are currently under construction,” noted Bjørn Helge Hjartåker, production director/COO at Nova Sea. “Nova Sea entered into a framework agreement with Folla Maritime back in 2022, and this contract reaffirms our strong partnership with them.”
