Rolls-Royce wins large-scale BESS order for wind farm in Turkey

Rolls-Royce has been awarded a contract by Polat Enerji, a Turkish investor in the renewable energy sector, to supply a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 132 MWh. The mtu QG EnergyPack will be integrated into the Göktepe Wind Power Plant near Yalova in northwestern Turkey.

According to Rolls-Royce, the mtu EnergyPack QG is optimized for front-of-the-meter utility scale projects, as well as large commercial and industrial applications. It is designed to store excess energy from renewable sources during production peaks and discharge it during periods of high demand.

The system is comprised of a battery rack, power conversion system (PCS), medium voltage skid, auxiliary power transformer with sub-distribution cabinet and the mtu EnergetIQ Asset Controller. Its modular design enables easy scalability, with storage capacity ranging from 4.47 to more than 100 MWh.

At the Göktepe Wind Power Plant, surplus energy generated by the plant will be stored in the battery systems to prevent grid congestion at times when sufficient electricity is available. Later, the storage units will supply green electricity to the grid when there is no wind but energy is still needed. The mtu EnergetIQ intelligent control platform will help ensure that the plant can be operated efficiently.

“With the large-scale battery storage system, we are working with Polat Enerji to help stabilize the grid in Turkey,” said Andreas Görtz, president Sustainable Power Solutions, Rolls-Royce Power Systems. “Our battery solutions, which are among our strategic focus areas, sustainably and reliably support energy supply worldwide.”
