Cummins closing Memphis ReCon turbo facility
25 January 2021
Cummins announced that it is consolidating its remanufacturing of turbochargers to an existing facility in South Carolina and will close its Cummins ReCon facility in Memphis, Tenn., that has been in operation since 1966. The move is expected to be completed by the third quarter of this year.
The work will be shifted to an existing Cummins Turbo Technology facility in North Charleston, S.C.
“The decision has been made as part of our company’s necessary and ongoing efforts to continuously improve operational efficiency and remain competitive and the top choice for our customers,” the company said in a statement. “The key driver for the decision is that turbochargers are lasting longer, thereby decreasing the demand for remanufactured turbochargers. Due to the decreasing demand Cummins is consolidating its operations to its most updated plant.”
The Memphis ReCon operation has 300 employees. “We understand this announcement brings uncertainty, and we plan to provide significant support to minimize the impact on our employees, their families, our suppliers and the local communities,” the company said.
