Daihatsu engine powering LNG vessel

Premium Content

NYK Line’s Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) Plumeria Leader entered commission this year equipped with the Daihatsu Diesel marine-use dual-fuel engine 6DE28DF. This vessel marks the third to be equipped with one of our dual-fuel engines.

Following on from Sakura Leader, this new liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled vessel is capable of transporting approximately 7000 units per vessel (base car conversion). It will be engaged in the transportation of finished vehicles from companies including the Toyota Motor Corp.

Through the conversion to LNG and an improved hull form, this next-generation environmentally-focused vessel sees around a 40% improvement in CO2 emissions per unit of travel and expected reductions of around 99% for SOx (sulfur oxide) emissions and around 86% of NOx (nitrogen oxide) when compared to conventional HFO engines.

The 6DE28DF engine equipped on this vessel can switch operation between LNG-fuelled gas mode or liquid-fuelled diesel mode according to the situation. With its capacity to simultaneously reduce not only CO2 but also SOx, NOx and PM (particulate matter), it is a high-performance environmentally-kind engine.

This LNG-fired technology is part of a four model line-up outputting 800 kW to 4000 kW, with the first shipments of the other 3 engine models scheduled within this year and a steady increase in demand anticipated in the future.
