Hybrid Solution For Rental Power

06 November 2019

At Distributed Power Europe trade show in Rimini, Italy, Energy Rental and FPT Industrial have presented a zero-emissions hybrid generator set designed for the rental market in the show business, in cooperation with Sices and Riello UPS.

The hybrid gen-set features a Stage-5-compliant Cursor 9 diesel engine by FPT Industrial with 300 kVA power output; Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and lithium battery stacks by Riello UPS; and electric control and distribution systems by Sices.

Alessandro De Berti, business development manager at Energy Rental, explained that this containerized generator system answers the demands of events organizers, looking for reliable, powerful, stable and quiet power generation. Energy Rental is very active in the market of rental power for the show business and delivers to customers involved in sport events, concerts, TV events and fashion shows.

Sices’ Sales Operation Manager, Christian Piazzalunga, said that Sices developed the electric control and distribution systems by analizing first the challenges customers encounter in the rental market.

The company highlighted four main areas and together with the project’s partners tackled each: first, operation and wear, which have been addressed in this gen-set with the utiization of high-performing lithium battery stacks, that allow for a reduced use of the diesel generator; noise emissions, which are zero when the system uses the UPSs and batteries, and a very low 55 dB with the diesel engine running. Then comes the issue of unmanned operation: a problem that has been solved with the Sices’ remote-controlled automatic control system. Finally, the problematic of the power load to deliver, which is defined only with the gen-set installation directly on site; this issue is tackled with the UPSs and very flexible gen-set control system.

From a reliability point of view – another key requirement in the show business – the gen-set is totally redundant, thanks to the combination of UPSs, batteries, and diesel engine.

The Cursor 9 diesel engine, supplied by FPT Industrial, contributes with 300 kVA electric power to the gen-set output. Alessando Zilli, FPT’s product marketing manager, explained that the engine is compliant with EU Stage 5 emissions standards, employing the Hi-eSCR2 aftertreatment system by FPT.

HI-eSCR2 technology is maintenance-free for life, and FPT is capable of delivering the system in a pre-assembled and hardwired version, for a plug-and-play solution. The aftertreatment package can also be mounted in a horizontal or vertical position, to allow for more flexibility in the use of tight assembly spaces.

The hybrid gen-set by Rental Energy will be available commercially from 2020.
