Improved Dump Truck Cylinders

11 July 2018

The Cylinder Division of Parker Hannifin Corp. announced it has developed an improved version of its single acting telescopic (SAT) hydraulic cylinders for the dump truck market. The new SAT cylinder offers a 25% increase in operating pressure to 2500 psi (127 bar) for improved strength and performance, the company said.

Parker has redesigned the SAT hydraulic cylinders in an effort to improve productivity and reduce long-term costs. Lighter in weight by an average 4% due to smaller gaps between stages and decreased space between sleeves, the new version requires less hydraulic oil to fill the cylinder and enables a 14% average reduction in cycle time, the company said. This, Parker said, may allow customers to downsize their cylinder and potentially the size of the hydraulic reservoir.

Thicker walls and wider bearings result in an average 25% improvement to the cylinder column strength, which Parker said helps to provide longer cylinder life. Polyurethane U-cup seals and umbrella-style wipers offer a more robust sealing package to minimize contaminate ingression into the cylinder.
