Scania has reported that it has reached an agreement with Northvolt to purchase the heavy industry division of the Swedish battery maker.

The truck OEM will position the heavy-duty battery unit within its Power Solutions division. This business markets Scania engines and other components for use across a range of industries, including construction, agriculture and power generation.

The deal comes as Northvolt attempts to remain solvent. At the end of 2024 the battery producer filed for US Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after production was halted for a time and fund raising efforts failed.

The sale of the business unit, known as Northvolt Systems Industrial, follows divestments to Norsk Hydro and Volvo Cars as the battery maker looked to cut costs and refocus on its battery production operation in Sweden.

Northvolt Systems Industrial is based in Gdansk, Poland. The site produces battery systems for industrial applications and energy storage. The location is also home to a related R&D center.
