Power Briefing recap: week of Nov. 11

Much was reported in last week’s Power Briefing. Here’s what you might have missed:
- Daimler Trucks North America recently updated its popular Freightliner Cascadia Class 8 tractor. Already popular with about 40 percent market share, the company had three goals in updating the Cascadia: safety, efficiency and profitability.
- Dan Romito remarked at the Power Progress Summit that China and India are undermining global decarbonization efforts. In part 2 of his remarks, he spoke of the impact power-hungry generative AI was also going to have on the road to net zero.
- The Canadian Urban Transit Research & Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC) included discussion of nontraditional modes of public transit in its recent Zero Emission Transit & Mobility (ZETM) conference. They are intended to fill the gaps in traditional mobility, such as buses and trains.
- Solinftec said it’s trying to provide growers with actionable intelligence about their crops via an autonomous robot and AI. The company’s Solix robot serves as the “eyes” for AI data science assistant Alice. Together, they help growers monitor crop conditions.
Other news revealed some maritime developments. Switch Maritime is planning to build a hydrogen-fueled ferry in the U.S., Schottel will be supplying components to U.S. Coast Guard vessels and an electric tugboat has earned a Guinness World Record.
