Rimac Technology has created a new division, Rimac Energy, which will leverage the company’s existing technology to produce battery energy storage systems (BESSs).

Rimac is better known as a manufacturer of super-luxury battery-electric hypercars, including the 1900 hp (120 kWh) Nevera. But the OEM, which has its headquarters near Zagreb, Croatia, is now turning its expertise to manufacturing BESSs.

The Rimac Energy BESS will build on a ‘novel electrical architecture’, which will deliver performance, safety and availability advantages including a 50% reduction in energy loss and a 40% reduction in unit footprint.

The company portfolio will include utility-scale BESS suitable for commercial and industrial applications. Other features will include an integrated battery buffered charging solution.

Several prototype projects are now underway, including development of a battery storage solution for solar and wind power plants operated by a renewable energy company.

Rimac Energy will produce its pilot system for selected customers this year, with commissioning coming online in 2024. Volume production is slated to start in 2025, with annual production forecast to reach 10 GWh.
