Steyr, a regional agricultural brand of CNH Industrial based in Austria, has been awarded its second Red Dot Design Award of 2022, with the recognition by judges of the Hybrid Drivetrain Konzept diesel/electric hybrid powertrain in the Design Concept category.

The company announced it had received a Red Dot Design Award earlier this year in the Product Design category for its Terrus CVT production tractor range.

Judged by a panel of jurors from across the globe, the Red Dot Design Award is one of the world’s largest design competitions and has become a coveted mark of design quality. Given the diversity of manufactured product designs, the awards are judged across three separate disciplines, with competitions for each of these held annually.

Unveiled in March as part of Steyr’s 75th anniversary celebration, the Hybrid Drivetrain Konzept, which is still under development, was presented to highlight the benefits of modular electric drive systems, which combine a combustion engine, generator and several electric motors. Entered into the Design Concept category for design concepts and prototypes, the technology was selected as the winner for its ingenuity of design as well as its potential efficiency gains.

“The Hybrid Drivetrain Konzept offers enormous potential for efficiency savings that will benefit both tractor owners and the environment, and while it is a concept study, it incorporates features which may find their way into future tractors across our ranges,” said Christian Huber, vice president global tractor product management at Steyr.

“Electric drive systems have the potential to power a lightweight, high-horsepower tractor delivering fuel consumption advantages averaging 8%, plus new levels of driving experience and performance in the field and on the road.”

As a category winner, the Hybrid Drivetrain Konzept will be featured in the next edition of the Red Dot Design Yearbook and be presented in the winners’ area of the Red Dot Design Award website. The awards presentation will take place at a ceremony in Singapore on Sept. 27.
