Turbine Ignition Transformers

Foster Transformer Co. said it has redesigned the enclosure for its gas turbine ignition transformers to allow for shorter delivery times and more flexible configuration. An interchangeable plate on the line side allows the use of various terminal blocks, studs, or circular connectors, and the SAE ARP670 high voltage connector can now be located in the center or offset as required, the company said.

The transformers are high reactance designs with a 15,000 V output and 25 mA short circuit current. The company said that upgraded materials and construction methods are employed to insure a long, trouble-free service life in ambient temperatures up to 135°C (275°F).

A range of configuration options are intended to simplify installation in a variety of stationary gas turbines from GE, Pratt & Whitney, Allison, Westinghouse, etc. Each ignition transformer is encapsulated in MIL-PRF-23586F UL940V silicone elastomer for maximum protection against shock and vibration, thermal cycling stress, dielectric failure and corrosion, and includes Class 180 (H) insulation, Foster Transformer said. Stainless steel enclosures and high voltage connectors are used to withstand harsh environments.

Foster said it can provide quick turnaround, start-up and support low-to-mid volume applications from its Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.A., plant. The company said it has additional manufacturing capacity available in China to support long run, high-volume applications.
