Caterpillar powers remote gold mining operation

Located in the remote Aktobe region of Kazakhstan, West Gold Mining Limited’s new gold mining operation is nearly 300 km (186 miles) from the nearest city. With no existing electrical infrastructure, a solution was needed that could deliver reliable, continuous power.

Extending grid infrastructure was considered, but distance and cost made on-site generation a more practical option. A detailed feasibility study showed that a self-sustained gas power solution could help reduce reliance on external infrastructure while supporting the mine’s immediate operational needs and future growth plans.

After technical collaboration with Borusan Cat, the Cat dealer and distributor for Turkey, the Caucasus and Central Asia, West Gold Mining Limited selected two new Cat G3500K series gas generator sets to run in prime power mode and deliver off-grid power. The containerized enclosure configuration was chosen to support operation in demanding conditions, including temperatures ranging from -30° C (-22° F) in winter to more than 30° C (86° F) in summer.

The G3500K series includes models offering 1.5- to 2.5-eMW continuous ratings. The gas power solution is designed to operate in island mode independent from the grid, providing a foundation that can adapt as production requirements evolve.

“We needed a power solution that could operate independently off the grid while supporting our long-term plans. The Cat solution, along with the local support provided, gave us confidence in both performance and future scalability,” said Beken Erik, CEO, West Gold Mining Limited.

Beyond product performance, West Gold Mining Limited prioritized having local service, reliable availability of parts and on-the-ground support. A Customer Value Agreement with Borusan Cat is planned following installation and commissioning to provide peace of mind and maintenance support.

‘‘This project demonstrates how we help customers solve practical energy challenges by delivering reliable, scalable power systems backed by local expertise, service and long-term support,’’ said Melissa Busen senior vice president, Cat Electric Power.
