Cummins X15 Dives Into Marine Market
04 September 2018
Cummins Inc. has launched a marine version of its X15 diesel engine targeting commercial marine market segments including inland waterways, commercial fishing and passenger transport.
“Our marine X15 engine is yet another example of Cummins continued investment in the marine market,” said Jim Schacht, executive director, Cummins Global Marine Business. “Following the introduction of our marine QSK95 engine, which has more power and durability than any other high-speed marine engine in its class, our new marine X15 engine reinforces our commitment to deliver the products our customers need to be successful.”
The X15 was originally developed for the heavy-duty trucking market in 2016. Cummins said it has shipped two million 15 L engines across multiple segments to date, and will offer a two-year on the new marine versions.
An inline six-cylinder engine, the X15 diesel it has bore and stroke dimensions of 137 x 169 mm for an overall displacement of 14.9 L. The marine X15 will be available in variable speed and fixed speed ratings from 450 to 600 hp (336 to 447 kW) and will meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 3 and International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier 2 emissions standards.
The X15 incorporates the Cummins XPI common rail fuel system that delivers injection pressures over 37,000 psi, which results in a more efficient fuel burn, reduced engine emissions and optimized fuel economy, Cummins said.
The system is controlled by the CM2350 engine control module designed to provide advanced diagnostic and monitoring capability, as well as engine protection through de-rates and automated engine shut downs to prevent catastrophic failures. The CM2350 technology also integrates fuel sensor monitoring, digital engine start/stop functionality and gear pressure and temperature.
The first installation of Cummins X15 marine engines will be a repower of a Louisiana crew boat where it will replace an older competitive engine, Cummins said.
