Four LNG dual-fuel vessels to be powered by WinGD engines

WinGD has received an order from Singapore-based Pacific International Lines for four 82-cm bore X923DF2.0 engines to be used to power four 8000 TEU LNG dual-fuel vessels. The ammonia-ready vessels will be built at privately owned Chinese shipyard Yangzijiang Shipbuilding and be delivered in 2025.

The current order is the second by Pacific International Lines for WinGD engines since March 2022. The container operator previously contracted with the Swiss engine designer for its 92 cm bore X92DF-2.0 dual-fuel engines to power four 14000 TEU boxships that are also dual-fuel ammonia-ready.

“We have identified LNG as a commercially viable transition fuel solution,” said Lars Kastrup, CEO, Pacific International Lines. “The new vessels, which will once again be LNG dual-fuel and ammonia ready, will contribute toward achieving our decarbonization goal of attaining net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.”

The X923DF2.0 engines will be the first to use WinGD’s X-DF2.0 technology. The intelligent Control by Exhaust Recirculation (iCER) emissions reduction technology will enable the engines to provide improved combustion control, optimal fuel consumption and minimal pilot fuel injection across the full engine load, said WinGD. Operators can also achieve Tier III NOx compliance in diesel or gas mode.

In addition, the engines are designed to reduce methane slip and overall emissions and fuel consumption. The result is an overall reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 8% in gas mode and 6% in diesel mode, the company stated.

“The first X82DF2.0 engines to reach market will be delivered to a customer that already has confidence in the ability of our new technology to reduce emissions and fuel consumption even further,” said Roger Specker, MD Singapore, WinGD. “This order is also the perfect celebration for nearly a decade of cooperation with PIL, which first ordered our X72 diesel-fueled engines in 2012.”
