mtu EnergyPacks for German grid stabilization

10 November 2022

Rolls-Royce has delivered six of a total of eight mtu EnergyPacks to Vispiron, the southern German provider of sustainable mobility and energy solutions. The battery storage systems have largely been commissioned in solar parks in Bavaria and Thuringia in Germany and are used for so-called intraday trading – the short-term purchase and sale of electricity delivered on the same day.

Intraday trading is particularly important for absorbing unpredictable changes in electricity production and demand caused by the volatile feed-in of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. “With regard to increasingly volatile electricity markets, battery storage can be used to profitably market storage capacity while having a stabilizing effect on our power grids,” said Florian Schönberger, CTO of Vispiron Energy GmbH & Co. KG.

One of the decisive factors for Vispiron to cooperate with the Rolls-Royce Power Systems was that the mtu EnergyPacks are fully integrable, modular systems, which are available with power ratings from 60 kVA to 2000 kVA and storage capacities from 70 kWh to 2200 kWh.

The six mtu EnergyPack QL units that have been delivered to four different Vispiron solar parks are rated 1000 kVA which a storage capacity of 1553 kWh. The company will also deliver a pair of mtu EnergyPack QS systems, one rated 200 kVA and 267 kWh and the other 300 kVA size and 534 kWh. The smaller units will be in service for industrial plant peak shaving and other applications.

As marketer of the battery storage systems and green power supplier, SEtrade GmbH, a member of the Vispiron Group, uses the virtual power plant in combination with an autotrading system to react to price fluctuations on the stock exchange in real time.

“We see a growing market in the Vispiron business model and in our storage products and are pleased that together we can make a relevant contribution to grid and supply stability and thus actively contribute to the energy transition,” said Andreas Görtz, president Sustainable Power Solutions at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

Rolls-Royce produces its mtu brand battery systems at its plant in Ruhstorf, Bavaria. The products are offered as 20 ft. and 40 ft. containers or in more compact versions which are just under 10 ft. In addition to the lithium-ion battery modules, the mtu EnergyPacks include electronic controls, inverters and cooling equipment, making them a complete storage solution.

Rolls-Royce said more than 100 mtu energy packs are in use worldwide.
