New Vermeer stump cutter sees 40% productivity boost

Vermeer has launched the new SC402 stump cutter designed for tree care professionals performing stump removal. The SC402 is equipped with a 40-gross-hp (29.8-kW) Briggs & Stratton Vanguard EFI/ETC engine with high torque output (56 ft.-lb.) that the company said enables up to 40% more productivity than the stump cutter’s predecessor, the SC382. Equipped with standard four-wheel drive, the SC402 balances torque between the drive wheels, minimizing turf disturbance while maximizing traction.

“With its increased torque and the electronic throttle control (ETC), operators can expect consistent power delivery, particularly when cutting below grade,” said Josh Vrieze, group product manager, Vermeer Environmental Equipment. “The machine’s design also prioritizes maneuverability in confined spaces and ease of operation.”

A key feature of the SC402 is the SmartSweep control system, which is designed to maintain consistent cutter wheel speed. The control system monitors engine load and adjusts the cutter wheel sweep rate accordingly. Operators have the option of the Vermeer cutting system (VCS) or the Yellow Jacket cutter system to suit different ground conditions and operational preferences.

For access to restricted areas, the stump cutter’s width can be reduced to 35.5 in. (90 cm) by removing the dual wheels, allowing it to pass through standard 36-in. (91.4-cm) gates.

Other features include a standard operator presence system, optional remote control and optional backfill blade. The unit comes with a 10-gal. (37.9 L) fuel tank for extended operating periods and easily accessible panels for routine maintenance.
