Deutz reveals plans to acquire electric motor specialist
02 September 2025

German power specialist Deutz is to finalise the purchase of Sobek Group, a German company which supplies high-performance pumps based on its electric motors and control electronics.
The acquisition is described as a ‘logical continuation’ of the Deutz Dual+ strategy, which aims to broaden the company portfolio and reduce dependence on the cyclical internal combustion engine business.
While Sobek is active in such areas as Formula 1 and Formula E (electrified motor racing), material provided by Deutz noted that the greatest potential lies in defence technology, specifically development of drones.
“Through Sobek, we can gain direct access to the rapidly growing defence market and make strategic inroads in this sector beyond the sale of conventional drive systems,” said Deutz CEO Dr. Sebastian C. Schulte.
He continued: “Defence is rapidly evolving in the wake of new technologies and changes to warfare. And demand for military drones is set to continue to increase. Together with Sobek, we can proactively position ourselves as a relevant systems partner in this young and rapidly growing market, and we aim to further expand the established business in motor sports and medical technology.”
The tech supplied by Sobek is reported to provide superior power density and high energy efficiency which can be precisely controlled, characteristics in the latest drone applications.
For Deutz, the acquisition is said to be the net step in the transition from component manufacturer to system provider. It’s also thought that Sobek can deliver tech for the off-highway segment, particularly control engineering.
Drones are also useful in areas including logistics, infrastructure monitoring and urban transportation, where the machines help by moving items.
