A first for Siemens Energy in Japan

Siemens Energy received its first order for a SGT-800 gas turbine in Japan.

EPC customer JGC Japan Corp. chose the turbine and its related components for a power plant that JGC will build for Sumitomo Chemical in Chiba Works of Ichihara City in Chiba.

The full scope of supply will consist of the SGT-800 gas turbine, a generator and turbine controls, with the performance test completion of the plant planned for 2023. This inaugural SGT-800 order intake is an important positioning for Siemens Energy to penetrate Japan’s cogeneration market, and to be regarded as a clean, viable alternative with low carbon emissions—a departure from the traditional coal-fueled plants, Siemens Energy said. It also underscores Siemens Energy’s commitment to the Japanese market with local offices and experts supporting the country’s energy transition efforts.

For Sumitomo Chemical, the plan to redivert its resources to this new facility from the previous fossil fuel plant signifies its intention to reduce carbon emissions by more than 240 000 tons annually, which is equivalent to about 20% of carbon emissions produced by Chiba Works.

Siemens Energy K.K. President & CEO Mr. Yasuhiko Otsuki said this milestone achievement is a significant step towards expanding the sales of gas turbines for cogeneration plants and similar operations in Japan, and that Siemens Energy will provide the full support on project execution to commercial operation.

“The SGT-800 gas turbine is a best-in-class gas turbine with a proven track record,” Otsuki said. “To date, about 400 units have been ordered and installed in plants worldwide. We are pleased to receive this first SGT-800 order in Japan that, once operational, will help contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions by our customers.”
